Effortless Hibiscus & Basil Lemonade

Effortless Hibiscus Lemonade

While flipping through the pages of our recipe LookBook, I found an old quote that I had put in there before : A recipe has no soul. You, as a cook (yes, you are a cook even if you don’t think you are) have to bring soul to a recipe.

This recipe is so simple yet manages to bring back so many memories; that’s the simple formula to a successful, heartfelt recipe, it brings MEANING.

Anyways, this fuss-free recipe comes in courtesy of my lovely hibiscus plant in my garden and it is hella refreshing, if I do say so myself. As Hong Kong is quite humid and hot I make this drink very often in my home. First of all the flavour of the lemonade is amazingly delicious and secondly Hibiscus itself have a lot of health beneficial properties.

Effortless Hibiscus & Basil Lemonade

  • 1/4 cup Hibiscus petals ( fresh)
  • 1/2 tbsp basil seeds
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 cup water
  • 4 tsp sugar (granuels)
  • 1 tbsp mint leaves (finely chopped)
  1. Take a sauce pan add water and hibiscus petals, keep it for boiling at medium flame.

  2. Once it get boiled turn off the stove. You will see that water has become little purpulish.

  3. Meanwhile in a small bowl soak the basil seeds in cold water.

  4. Strain the water, add lemon juice, and after adding lemon juice the water will turn pink. Add sugar while the water is still hot so it can melt easily.

  5. Once basil seeds bloomed add them also in hibiscus water.

  6. Finally add mint leaves. Keep this lemonade in refrigerator for 2-3 hours.
